Welsh, Free Range Pedigree Pork, Lamb and Hogget
About Us...
We are a family run, small farm in rural Monmouthshire, Wales. We pride ourselves on the love and care that we give to our animals.
All of our animals have the freedom to roam and forage.
We rear Pedigree Welsh rare breed pigs and have a variety of sheep breeds, including the rare Llanwenog breed.
We sell our Welsh pork, lamb, and hogget direct to customers.
Our Story...
We are a family who, due to work commitments, relocated from Salisbury to the rolling hills of Monmouthshire in 2013. We were fortunate enough to be able to buy land with our house and Lloyd Family Farm was born.
On moving in our eldest son decided that he wanted some pocket money. He bought some chickens with his birthday money and started to sell the eggs at the farm gate and to friends and family. Inspired by his success we decided to rear our own Christmas turkey. As an ex-vegetarian there was a risk that we'd end up with a pet turkey so we decided to start our adventure by buying 20 poults. I certainly wasn't going to have 20 pet turkeys. Thankfully we were able to find Christmas tables for them amongst our family, friends and work colleagues and promptly started to plan our next venture.
Having thoroughly enjoyed rearing the turkeys we decided to try our hand at rearing pigs. Again we didn't want to be left with a huge pet pig, so we started with 6 Tamworth rare breed pigs. We sourced weaners locally and reared them to pork weight. Again we found homes for them and started to think about turkeys for Christmas 2015. Year on year we have steadily increased our numbers and year on year they always find a home.
During the latter half of 2015 we began to contemplate sheep. We sourced Welsh Mountain sheep from a farmer friend in Powys and our flock was born. A number of bottle fed, larger lambs were added to our flock of Welsh Mountain ewes and we then had a mixed flock, that I call my "randoms" of: Charollais Cross and Welsh Mountain. A few years later the black faced Llanwenog entered our lives. A rare breed of Welsh native sheep on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust watch list. In their heyday, during the Industrial Revolution they were favoured by Londoners (end of the trainline) for their sweeter, more flavoursome meat.
I am now the proud shepherdess of two flocks: The Randoms and the Llanwenog Flock.
In the summer of 2017 we were approached by NFU Mutual to become a case study for their Smallholders Insurance Policy. Click on the photo above to watch our NFU Mutual video for a clearer idea of where we started. I was amused to see the final edit as they'd made me out to be a very capable single mother and farmer, in total control of the animals and children, but sadly I am not Wonder Woman and my long suffering husband very much pulls his weight too.
During the summer of 2018 we were fortunate to expand our enterprise into the neighbouring farm. Having tried a variety of rare pig breeds we settled on specialising in the Pedigree Welsh breed. Which are also on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust watch list. We bought a Pedigree Welsh boar for our two lovely Tamworth ladies and two Pedigree Welsh gilts. The Tamworth ladies retired to a farm in Brecon to clear woodland. The two Welsh gilts became sows and went on to rear a further 5 breeding gilts who also went on to be sows on our farm. The herd of 7 ladies went on to be happily served by Billy: The 2022 Three Counties Show Champion until 2023.
Sadly 2023 threw us a curve ball. Emma was diagnosed with breast cancer so difficult decisions needed to be made. In order to allow Emma to go through the surgery and treatment we sold all of the breeding age animals on the farm to other farms to continue their lives.
We kept our two elderly matriarchal ewes: Smokey and Jade, 2 Rams: Hamish and Salty, 43 ewe lambs and 4 weaner gilts from our last litter of pigs. It would be a year before anyone would be getting pregnant which worked superbly with Emma's treatment timeline.
July 2024 - The breeding kicked off again with the arrival of Mr Leo! Our new Welsh Pedigree Boar.
It is now 2025, our ewe lambs of 2023 have just delivered us 73 lambs and our 4 little gilts are onto their second litters of piglets.
Life goes on...Onwards and Upwards...
Our Animals
Our focus for our animals is high welfare standards.
We rear our animals with love from beginning to end. We limit our numbers to ensure that each animal has the space it needs to enjoy life. We feed them high quality feed, milled on a farm on the Wales/England border. All of our animals have the freedom to roam and forage, just as nature intended.
Our Lambs and Hogget are pasture fed from our natural meadow fields.
We make small bale hay for our winter feed the traditional way: family muscle power!
Our piglets are born outside in fully insulated, very fancy, farrowing arks.
We have Welsh Pedigree weaners and breeding stock available most of the year. All are birth notified and, if sold for breeding, with be tattooed and checked for suitability.
Our Produce...
I personally transport all of our animals to the abattoir (no 7072).
Having given our animals the best life that we can, we feel it is also important to aim to give them the best end. The abattoir is small, calm and quiet and helps us to achieve our aim. The carcasses are expertly butchered to the customer's requirements ( if pre-ordered) back on the farm in our butchery. It is vacuum packed, labelled, boxed and either picked up from the farm, delivered locally or mailed out frozen by Royal Mail using their next day delivery on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.
Whilst meat packaging requires a degree of plastic to maintain freshness and prevent freezer burn, where possible we aim to use eco friendly packaging, such as eco trays for our sausages and burgers. To deliver, via courier, we package in sustainable and recyclable cardboard boxes with wool liners and ice packs to keep the produce frozen for up to 48 hours. On testing the Sausages and Bacon, depending on delivery time, may need to be refrigerated on arrival as opposed to being put in the freezer. The pork joints and chops can go straight back into the freezer.
We have pork, including sausages, available most of the time. Lamb and Hogget can be pre-ordered. They are usually available in August/September/October (Lamb and Hogget) and again in March/April (Lamb), but larger orders can be usually be accommodated outside of these times.
A hogget is a lamb that has entered its second year of life. My hogget will have enjoyed a second summer season of eating lush, nutritious grass. This gives the meat more depth of flavour, larger chops and better value for money.
We have gained a five star hygiene rating from Monmouthshire County Council.
